Alex Candelaria Trio Sidewalk Technicolor (Evander 004)
When the wah-wah pedals and other excesses of fusion finally fizzled out , the coupling Jazz and rock sensibilities left us with an adventurous , electrified style of Jazz every bit as forward as rock and roll - even at tempos as slow as that found on this disc's "The wrath of leashed persistence" , a cut that well represents the post- 70's definition of a jazz ballad , quiet but heady stuff, never too pretty. These guys have it down, having ingested large doses of early Metheny, Scofield and Martino.
Candelaria is a whip of a writer , too; twisted , almost Monkish themes like the one found on "Threadbare" create improvisational challenges that the threesome always conquer. To play as intelligently and post traditionally as these guys do , you probably have to be walking jazz encyclopedias . No mere doodling going on here, not for a minute. Any nonjazzer who doesn't understand the concept of a jazzplayer having something to say, or of a wordless song telling a story, should check out this intense band.
